Supreme Court of Justice orders demolition of Torre de Plata

The Supreme Court of Justice has ordered the builders of the Torre de Plata located next door to the Dominican Fiesta hotel in Santo Domingo to demolish the building. The decision puts an end to a six-year long legal battle between the promoters and the neighborhood association.

The Los Cacicazgos neighborhood association set a precedent for winning a case for violation of neighborhood rules. The high-rise building was found to be in violation with municipal construction rules. Lawyer Miriam Paulino, representing the residents’ association said that the developer was given 30 days to demolish the building.

The builders were in the process of constructing a 31-story building with 248 apartments. The board challenged their plans, on the grounds that planning regulations for the area only allowed six floors.

Deputy Minou Tavarez Mirabal, who was present at the press conference to announce the decision yesterday, Tuesday 9 September 2014, said that the ruling was an important legal decision in favor of citizen rights.
