Tourism increasing in the Southwest

According to the vice president of the Barahona Tourist Cluster and board member of the Dominican Republic Hotels and Tourism Association (Asonahores), Polibio Schiffino, occupancy has improved in hotels in Barahona and the surrounding areas.

He said that in response to the demand, 200 more hotel rooms would be available in the coming year with the reopening of the former Bahoruco Beach Resort, the renovation of government-owned Guarocuya Hotel and the addition of rooms to several existing hotels along the Barahona coastline.

Schiffino said that hotel occupancy had increased by more than 30% over previous years with the growth being equally divided between foreigners and Dominicans.
