El Caribe reports that President Hipolito Mejia has called for an additional legislative session to hear the controversial Ley de Lemas proposal and “seven or eight other laws,” including one on banking risks. Tirso Mejia Ricart told reporters that the party commission charged with writing the proposed law had finished its work and that President Mejia would send the piece to the Congress today. In a nationally televised speech, former president Leonel Fernandez called the proposal “an attempt to perpetuate the PRD party in power beyond 16 August.”
