US focuses on political aspects of FTA

Pistas bulletin, prepared by Elsie Done-Molina for the Unidad de Productos Inteligentes de Recursos Globales, reported that Industry & Commerce Minister Sonia Guzman, who also heads the Dominican negotiating team, said that the US wants to be part of the solution to Dominican problems, and will not grant fewer concessions than those given to Central America. Furthermore, she said the US position is to focus on the trade agreement from a political viewpoint as well as from the technical side. The first day of talks (Monday, 12 January) focused on intellectual property and trade capacity building issues, moving on to services and investments and the free trade list yesterday. Government-to-government negotiations are taking place at the Hotel Jaragua.
