Peynado doesn’t favor Ley de Lemas

Contrary to recent speculation, defeated PRSC pre-Presidential candidate Jacinto Peynado has come out against the controversial Ley de Lemas. There had been speculation that he would benefit from the proposed reform in electoral law, which would allow more than one candidate to run under the same party banner. Peynado said it would only serve to intensify the divisions in his party, which selected Eduardo Estrella as its Presidential candidate last year. Peynado predicted that multiple candidacies for the PRSC would only serve to fortify the PRD’s interests and he mentioned the case of PRSC activists Amable Aristy Castro and Rafael Bello Andino, who have shown signs of Presidential aspirations. Peynado, a former Vice-President under the late Joaquin Balaguer, claims that Estrella’s victory in the party’s primary was the result of widespread fraud. Peynado is currently in the United States receiving medical treatment.
