Ramon Perez Figuereo, a notorious merchant of strike organization in the Dominican Republic, is back at it. Like many others, the transport union leader lost credibility after the government met the price of many with the offer of very advantageous finance programs for the renovation of their member public transport vehicular fleets. Now Perez Figuereo has announced a nationwide strike for 28-29 January, which, he says, should be a peaceful protest. El Caribe reports the placement of posters calling for the resignation of President Mejia. “Why wait any longer? Let him resign now,” read the billboards and posters that have been placed around the city of Santo Domingo. Perez Figuereo participated, along with Ramon Hubieres (Fenatrano), Antonio Marte (Conatra) in dozens of strikes during the PLD government. During the Mejia administration, the transport union representatives instead participated in the Plan Renove, a US$350-million financial package for the purchase of vehicles that were distributed among trucking union Fenatrado and other public transportation unions. The Plan Renove scheme seems to have primarily benefited the Fenatrano and Conatra unions, to tell by the hundreds of buses and minivans circulating on city streets bearing those unions names.
