The iconic Ozama River is seriously affected by pollution from industrial and human waste. A private sector and government initiative seeks to reduce pollution in time to save the river. President Danilo Medina toured the river by boat yesterday, Sunday 30 November 2014, accompanied by Father Manuel Ruiz, who is active in the Life on the Ozama project. President Medina recently also visited the Lengua Azul barrio on the south bank of the river, together with Minister of Agriculture Angel Estevez and Fr. Ruiz.
