More voices against the law

As reported previously in DR1 news, groups from all quarters of society have expressed concern about the proposed electoral reform, which would allow each party to present as many as five Presidential candidates on its ticket. Diario Libre newspaper reports that the American Chamber of Commerce has come out against the controversial law, describing it as an “assault on democracy.” The Santiago Chamber of Commerce and Production for its part called on deputies to put the interests of the people above those of political factions when making their decision. In contrast, the PRSC’s Amable Aristy Castro has come out in favor, saying that the proposed law would help strengthen Dominican democracy at a time when what he described as “the main parties” were in crisis. Fellow PRSC members, as supporters of Presidential candidate Eduardo Estrella, hold the opposite view. Alexandra Izquierdo, Carlos Agramonte and Victor Garcia Santos said that the controversial law is “a child of the PRD.” Speaking in New York, PLD candidate Leonel Fernandez told a Dominican audience that the Ley de Lemas is nothing less than a PRD attempt to “abort the coming elections.” Fernandez reiterated his opposition to the proposed law, saying it went against democratic principles and public opinion.
