Hospitals to be built on border with Haiti

In a move aimed at reducing the number of Haitians who cross the border illegally in pursuit of free hospital services, the government’s Multilateral Aid Department (Digecom) has announced a tender for preparing a study on the health services required at the border with Haiti. Digecom director Engineer Antonio Vargas Hernandez said that the study would establish the type and number of hospitals that need to be built. The hospitals would be funded by the European Union. President Danilo Medina requested the construction of the hospitals from the European Union when the president of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy visited the Dominican Republic for a tri-national summit in the presence of Haitian President Michel Martelly.
