A Santiago judge has ordered three months of preventive custody for a Police captain assigned to the Police Anti-Drug Central Department (Dican). He is accused of trafficking 24.46 grams of marijuana. Police spokesman Jacobo Mateo Moquete said that the dismissal of police officer Gilberto Antonio Abreu Guzman was recommended after his arrest. He was in charge of Dican in Dajabon, on the border with Haiti. His lawyer, Sandy Peralta, said nevertheless that there was not sufficient proof to keep his client in jail. Abreu Guzman’s assistant, former police captain Starling Castillo Basora, was also arrested. El Nuevo Diario recalls that in 2013, Castillo Basora held the rank of sergeant and together with 14 other police officers was accused of carrying out an irregular arraignment in which a reported RD$60 million worth of drugs went missing. At the time he was removed from the police ranks.

Abreu Guzman and Castillo Basora were arrested on 30 December on Av. Estrella Sadhala in Santiago when driving a red Toyota Corolla 2005. Three packages of marihuana were found inside the vehicle.
