Former long-time PLD deputy, Minou Tavarez Mirabal has announced that she is in the process of creating a new party, the Democratic Option Party, and is seeking Central Electoral Board (JCE) recognition. Last year she resigned from the PLD and denounced what she described as corruption within the ranks. The new party hopes to be able to run in the May 2016 election.
“This is an initiative by people who believe that the current political players only mean to keep things are they are, by repeating misconduct and progressively weakening democracy and its fragile institutions,” she said. She said that the stop to impunity should start with action against the criminals responsible for the murder of her father, Manolo Tavarez Justo and his comrades.
She said that as a deputy she would continue working to salvage the Chamber of Deputies. She said that citizens are witness to the embarrassment caused by that institution and that citizens should be clear about who is responsible, pointing to the ruling PLD party. She called for rationalizing government spending, putting an end to overvalued tenders worth millions, spending on propaganda and bloated payrolls. She said she would vote against political patronage. Tavarez said that a new fiscal reform would only be carried out for the government to finance its political campaign.
