Following an agreement between the Dominican Teachers’ Association (ADP) and the Ministry of Education, the basic salary for public school teachers will increase from RD$14,300 to RD$16,016 from this month, January 2015.
Teachers received a 10% raise in 2014. This year’s increase is worth 12% and an additional raise is planned for 2016.
The number of teachers has increased by 111% between 2012 and 2015 and the average salary for a primary school teacher including incentives has increased from RD$26,259 in 2012 to RD$39,909 in 2015, which is 52%. The average salary for a middle school teacher, also with incentives has increased from RD$29,309 in 2012 to RD$46,028 this year, a 57% rise.
Education Minister Carlos Amarante Baret also announced increased investment in teachers’ health and pension benefits and the allocation of RD$300 million to build and equip recreational clubs for teachers.
