The Superintendence of Banks has authorized banks to accept expired ID cards (cedulas) for banking transactions, with the presentation of a second document, either a valid driver’s license or passport, as reported in Diario Libre. The newspaper reports that the long lines at the ID issuing centers vanished after the announcement that the document would still be valid for banking transactions. Nevertheless, the Superintendence of Banks said that the new ID would be required for new products, such as opening an account.
Around two million citizens have yet to renew their cards. The document is mandatory for the 2016 national election.
