Turtles born at Sans Souci beach

The Ministry of Environment reports that a first batch of one hundred baby turtles (Eretmochelys imbricate) has been located on Sans Souci beach, in Santo Domingo province. The beach off the Armada Officers’ Club has also been known to serve as a nesting ground for the Chelonia mydas turtle species. Last year around 200 turtles hatched there.

The baby turtles were assessed by scientists working for the Ministry of Environment and released again.

The Ministry made a nationwide call for protecting the turtles on the coasts.

The turtles are affected by coastal construction, solid waste such as plastic items, and deforestation, as well as by people who hunt them for their supposed aphrodisiac properties.
