DR: More than beaches, bachata and baseball

Minister of Foreign Relations Andres Navarro is calling for Dominican ambassadors and consuls to be more proactive in sharing information on the country, especially when it comes to the work being done in defense of human rights and the social policies implemented by the government. The call was made during the First Forum on Dominican Diplomacy taking place from Wednesday, 14 to Friday, 16 January at the Ministry of Foreign Relations in Santo Domingo. The event is being attended by 45 ambassadors and 43 consuls accredited abroad.

At the Forum, Minister of the Presidency Gustavo Montalvo spoke about the Presidential Foreign Policy Goals. “We need every one of you to devote your energies to finding more opportunities for the country,” he said. He said the time had come for the DR to be known for “more than beaches, bachata and baseball.”

Montalvo said that the Presidency was working with the Center for Export and Investment (CEI-RD) to draw up a list of exportable products by region to be used as a tool for opening doors for Dominican exports.

As part of the new foreign policy, the Minister of Foreign Relations said the goal is to increase efficiency in the service, make revenue collection by the consulates transparent, ensure the rights of Dominicans who live abroad, and position the country in international organizations.

Ambassador Alejandro Gonzalez Pons said the experience was a good opportunity to unify criteria and give coherence to the foreign sector, as reported in Diario Libre.
