911 works to control noise pollution

High noise levels are considered a health problem in the Dominican Republic, and the 911 Emergency Line began offering assistance to residents in Santo Domingo affected by loud noise on Wednesday, 15 January 2015.

As reported in Listin Diario, in the first eight hours of the service that began on Thursday, from midnight to 8am, some 52 complaints of excessive noise were received, of which 46 were for high music levels in 24 residences.

However, the 911 emergency line service will not respond to complaints of noise caused by children in schools during recess, domestic animals, residential alarms and construction work.

The legal framework for the new service is the Noise Regulations (Normas de Ruido), in addition to Law 287-04 on Prevention, Elimination and Limits of Harmful and Bothersome Noises, in Environment Law 64-00, Law 42-01 of Public Health, Law 176-07 of the National District, and Decree 10-12 that created the National Anti-Noise Commission.
