911 noise controls “a good start”

Dominican Otolaryngology Society spokesman William Aude has described the government’s decision to entrust the task of combating noise pollution to the 911 Emergency Line as “timid.” He said that the initiative is a start, but the authorities are not doing their job when it comes to controlling noise.

“Neither the Ministry of Interior and Police, nor Public Health nor the government are tackling the problem as they should,” he said. He said the greatest damage is from noise generated by vehicles on city streets.

Aude, nevertheless, praised the initiative and said he hoped it would help change the existing culture. In the Dominican Republic, many drivers overuse their vehicles’ horns, which increases noise pollution to very high levels.
