Jesuit priest Regino Martinez has accused the Dominican government of complicity with people smuggling from Haiti. He said that it is common knowledge that the going rate for passing through military border checkpoints is RD$2,000-RD$3,000. He says that military and police authorities benefit from the people smuggling business, as well as the motorcycle taxi (motoconcho) drivers.
“Everyone knows that there is illegal smuggling of Haitians, that it is a good business, where bribes start from the moment the border is crossed to the checkpoints,” he told Diario Libre.
He said the government loses around RD$7.3 billion for not resolving the situation of the undocumented Haitians. He criticized the fact that on the border, there is only one office for the National Foreigner Legalization Plan, in Dajabon.
