Dominican film writer-director Laura Amelia Guzman and her husband, Mexican filmmaker Israel Cardenas have won the international film critics association (FIPRESCI) jury prize for their movie “Sand Dollars.” The story of their win is told in this week’s Estilos Magazine (Diario Libre cultural supplement) Saturday, 17 January 2015 edition. Freddy Ginebra was in Cairo for the announcement in November.
The filmmaking couple has also filmed Cochochi (2007), Jean Gentil (2010) and Carmita (2013). Shot in Samana, Sand Dollars tells the story of a two-year relationship between an impoverished young local girl (Yanet Mojica) and her wealthy, older European lover (Geraldine Chaplin). The film tackles the issues of class, inequality and exploitation. Geraldine Chaplin, Laura Amelia Guzman and Israel Cardenas were present at the film festival ceremony in Cairo. The Festival is recognized as a competitive festival by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF) that regulates international film festivals around the world.
