Dominicans are using 911 to cut noise

In the first six days since the 911-noise control service was launched on 16 January 2015, the Emergency Line has received 3,307 complaints.

During a press conference at the Presidential Palace yesterday, Thursday 22 January 2015, 911 spokeswoman and Deputy Minister of the Presidency Zoraima Cuello said that 92% of the calls received were complaints about loud music, 7% regarding loud street vendors, and 1% for loud noise caused by construction work.

She said 2,442 cases were referred to the Ministry of Interior and Police, 37 businesses were fined and the authorities seized 838 speakers after responding to the calls.

Cuello said that the 911 service would help regulate the noise caused by disco-lights, the mobile sound systems used by politicians to blast out loud music. She also told the press that the 911 service was working with political parties, churches and other groups to encourage them to keep noise levels within the parameters established by the law. She said the press conference sought to inform all politicians who are planning to purchase loudspeakers for their campaigns. She said the 911 line was working with the Ministry of Environment and city governments to regulate the disco-lights and other amplification systems used by politicians in their political campaigns.
