Vice Admiral Radhames Lora Salcedo, the head of the National Emergency Commission (CNE), announced the official beginning of Operation Holy Week, a program designed to reduce accidents on the Dominican holiday that sees huge numbers of people heading for the country?s coasts. Lora told reporters for today?s dailies that almost RD$100 million would be used to try and provide guidance and assistance to vacationers. There will be as many as 150,000 volunteers with mobile hospitals, communication equipment, helicopters, tents and ambulances scattered all along the roads and beaches of the country, in an effort to reduce the deadly toll of accident victims, drownings and intoxications that occur each year at this time. Certainly a new addition to the preventive measures are the mobile hospitals which will provide basic life-support systems, first-aid, defibrillators, nebulizers, and cardiac monitors. The mobile hospitals were used for the Pan Am Games.
