Naturalization bill expires

Minister of Interior and Police Jose Ramon Fadul has reiterated that the Law for the Special Naturalization Regimen will not be extended.

He said that 8,755 people had applied for the fast-tracked citizenship. Applicants registered as having been born here before 2007 now have two years to qualify for Dominican citizenship. Foreigners still have time to legalize their status as residents under the National Foreigner Legalization Plan that expires on 15 June 2015 and subsequently apply for Dominican citizenship. As of 30 January 2015, 132,757 people had applied under the National Foreigner Legalization Plan.

Fadul said that rules were rules and the cut-off date had always been clear. He said that once the Legalization Plan expires, undocumented residents are subject to repatriation, as is the case in all countries that have immigration controls. He urged international organizations to be proactive and to help people with illegal status make the most of the free facilities being offered by the Dominican government to regularize their status.
