The public transport union that operates the bus route from Mao along the northwest to Manzanillo Bay went on strike yesterday, Tuesday 3 February 2015, in demand for the government to rebuild the road that is in poor condition. Repair works started several months ago but have since stopped, as the workers have not been paid.
North West Transport Federation president Modesto Torres said that the strike would last for 24 hours but that if the work did not resume they would strike indefinitely.
Parts of the repair works have been finished, but the recent heavy rain has meant that other areas have deteriorated further. They called on Public Works Minister Gonzalo Castillo to explain why the road repair works had stopped several months ago.
