Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus) vice president Servio Tulio Castanos is calling on Congress to pass a political parties ruling based on principles of transparency and respect for internal democracy as established in the 2010 Constitution.
He said that if a weak political parties bill is passed that is accommodated to the political parties this will be but a source of frustration for society and the democracy in the country. The PLD, which holds the Congressional majority, could pass a custom-made bill.
“A Political Parties Law has to guarantee internal democracy in the parties. If that is not clear the law will only serve to legitimize the status quo. Then Dominican society will have to be on alert for everything that has to do with the process,” he said, as reported in Diario Libre.
Castanos said that the political parties are using not even 5% of the RD$805 million they receive from the public purse every year. He said the political parties do not want regulation or transparency in the use of these funds.
