Around 140 resident doctors at the Los Mina Maternity Hospital have started an indefinite strike saying that they should not have to pay the RD$3,600 increase in the annual charge for guaranteeing their residency or the RD$10,000 for the draft of their thesis charged by the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).
The doctors have said that the regulation that establishes the increase was approved back in 2006 but has never been applied, and they were not told about it. They are blaming the Dean of the Health Sciences Faculty, Wilson Mejia.
They also announced that a meeting would be held at the Dominican Medical Association (CMD) at 9am today, Tuesday 10 February 2015 with all medical residents throughout the country, almost 4,000 in total.
Their spokeswoman, Judith Savinon, said that they could not count on their lecturers and that is why they have to study with doctors at the hospital. She added that they were struggling because they did not have the materials to enable them to study at the university.
