Complaint against judge in Claudio Nasco case

The lawyers representing the three men being tried for the murder of journalist Claudio Nasco are accusing the president of a National District Court, Sarah Veras, who is presiding over their sentencing, of being prejudiced against their defendants.

When the hearing began, Plutarco Jaquez, lawyer for one of the accused, said that Veras should not be involved as she was prejudiced against his client and therefore would not be impartial.

He claimed that journalist Nuria Piera, director of the TV program where Nasco worked, had discussed the sentence that the same judge had handed down in the case of Francina Hungria who was shot and blinded and had congratulated the judge.

Because of his complaint, the hearing was rescheduled for March 12 to allow the court of appeal to either confirm the same judge or to appoint another.

Nasco was murdered on December 13, 2013, in the Chevere Motel on the 30 de Mayo Highway in Santo Domingo. Oscar Perez (Yandel), Luis Manuel Estevez Ponciano, (Macuto or Anderson) and Joel Rafael Miliano Rodriguez (Mateo) were arrested and are being tried for the crime.
