President Danilo Medina and First Lady Candida Montilla headed a special flag ceremony with four flag bearers from the First Regiment of the Presidential Guard at the Presidential Palace at 8am yesterday, Tuesday 24 February 2015. The first regiment played the national anthem. The event, organized by the Permanent Commission for National Heritage under historian Juan Daniel Balcacer, was held in celebration of Independence Day on Friday, 27 February 2015.
Most of the government cabinet members attended the ceremony, which was also held concurrently at provincial governor’s offices nationwide.
The National Flag was conceived by founding father Juan Pablo Duarte at the swearing in ceremony for the Secret Society of the Trinity on 16 July 1838. The first flag, which was sewn by Concepcion Bona and Maria Trinidad Sanchez, was flown for the first time on 27 February 1844 during the proclamation of Independence at the El Conde gate in Santo Domingo, also known as the Altar of the Homeland.
