Jose Tomas Perez presents credentials to President Obama

New Dominican Ambassador to the United States Jose Tomas Perez has presented his credentials to President Barack Obama at a ceremony at the White House.

According to a White House statement, Perez conveyed to Obama that President Danilo Medina wanted both countries to continue working together on shared interests and invited him to visit the Dominican Republic to enjoy its hospitality, culture and natural attractions.

President Obama appreciated the welcome received by Vice President Joe Biden during his recent visit to the Dominican Republic and praised the success of the Caribbean Energy Security Summit held in Washington, DC in January 2015. He also highlighted that the DR-CAFTA was an excellent example of regional partnership.

Obama thanked Perez for the welcome provided by the Government and the Dominican people to vice president Joe Biden during his visit to the country, and praised the success of the Caribbean Energy Security Summit held in Washington in January.

Obama praised the Dominican Republic’s participation in the CBSI (Caribbean Basin Security Initiative) is essential to secure security and the rule of law in the Caribbean.

Perez praised the trade relationship between the Dominican Republic and the United States, saying that in 2014 trade was worth around US$12.5 billion and it was continuing to increase. He highlighted the importance of the foreign investment received in the DR from the United States, which represents one of its main priorities as well as the US tourists who visit the country.

Other matters raised by Ambassador Perez included the concerns of the Dominican government about the negotiations underway between the United States and a group of Asian countries, the Strategic Trans Pacific Agreement for Economic Association and the continued support of the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI) to combat drug trafficking in the region.
