The Minister of Energy and Mines Pelegrin Castillo is backing the construction of a new oil refinery with increased capacity. The National Petroleum Refinery owned in a Dominican and Venezuelan PDVSA partnership is under expansion with more than US$29 million reportedly being invested.
Minister Castillo says the new refinery would create quality jobs and would save the country US$400 million a year. The Dominican Republic imports most of its gasoline and diesel as finished products.
Speaking during a luncheon meeting organized by the Dominican Exporters’ Association (Adoexpo), Castillo spoke in favor of the drafting of an energy security plan that would make the country less dependent on imported fossil fuels. The country requires 110,000 barrels of refined oil a day.
