Air Force Colonel Pablo Leonel Velasquez Taveras, who described himself as part of President Hipolito Mejia?s team of bodyguards on his recent trip to the US, did not allow Customs personnel at Las Americas International Airport to inspect his luggage and forcefully carried through a suitcase containing jewelry that was detected by airport X-Ray equipment, according to a report prepared by the airport authorities, says Hoy newspaper today. The newspaper said that Velasquez Taveras insulted customs agent Diomarys Almonte, who had ordered that the two suitcases of the officer be subject to X-Ray, thus revealing the jewelry. Velasquez was not wearing his uniform when he arrived via at the terminal. The officer reportedly shoved his way ahead of other military members, threatening to have them fired, and then departed the airport. ?I am not going to allow anyone to open my suitcases. I am a colonel of the Presidential entourage and demand respect,? he said when the left the airport and requested the name of the supervisor of Customs.
