The Union of Medium-sized and Small Flour Goods Manufacturers (UMPIH) have announced that the price of one unit of “pan de agua,” a staple bread roll, would go up to RD$7, a RD$2 increase if the government does not come through with compensatory measures. In an announcement made yesterday, Thursday 5 March 2015, UMPIH president Francisco Capellan said that the implementation date was still to be defined and that they are open to meeting with the government to find a solution to the rising costs. The bakers say that they have experienced problems resulting from the changes to the Pro-Industria law, the increase in the foreign exchange rate and increases in taxation on ingredients. They say there have been increases in the prices of flour and yeast, and new taxes on sugar, oil and other ingredients, which has affected their costs.
