In Diario Libre today, Tuesday 10 March 2015, economist Eduardo Garcia Michel writes that the DR is at a crossroads of deciding to continue to allow unbridled immigration of poor people from Haiti (an estimated one million Haitians already live here) or to take action and start to apply the immigration and labor laws and intensify efforts to develop Haiti. “In the near future we could have a population different from our culture, with great relative weight and capacity of exercising political and voting rights. At that moment, the destiny of the Dominican people, who fought so hard for independence from Haiti, could be in the hands of that mass of immigrants, which no one authorized but because of omission, we have all consented,” he writes in Diario Libre.
