Two Dominican police officers were shot and wounded by a Haitian on Sunday, 9 March 2015, Haiti Libre reports. A Haitian man named as Wilber Nicholas was arrested for drunkenness and disturbing the public order and taken to a cell at the police post in Gualey, in the National District. Nicholas reportedly shot at Sergeant Angomas Valdez with the officers’ Taurus 9mm pistol when the latter had entered the cell to look for another detainee. He wounded the sergeant in the back before escaping while shooting in several directions, fortunately without hurting other people.
In the wake of this violent incident, Police Captain Juan Francisco Beriguete pursued the fugitive who shot him in the right leg. Despite his injury, the captain was able to shoot the fugitive, wounding him and recapturing him, as reported by Haiti Libre.
The two police officers were taken to the military hospital where they are recovering from their injuries. Nicholas was treated and will appear in court as soon as possible, as reported. The competent authorities have launched an investigation to reconstruct the details of the chronology of events.
