Re-election not good for Medina, but good for the PLD

Political analyst Rosario Espinal says that the best thing for President Danilo Medina is to be different and to refrain from changing the Constitution to run for President in 2016. To do so, furthermore, he would need the support of legislators who back him and others who are known to be supporters of former President Leonel Fernandez, who is also the president of the ruling party and has announced he seeks to run for President in 2016.

Nevertheless, Espinal says that Medina’s high popularity rating means it would suit the ruling party to go ahead with the modification so that Medina can run for office again.

However, she concludes that it would be best if neither ran. “The best thing for Dominican democracy would be for neither Danilo Medina nor Leonel Fernandez to be candidates in 2016, and for a democratic primary to be held in the PLD and a new candidate to emerge,” said the political expert.

The latest Gallup poll showed Danilo Medina as the most popular PLD politician, who would win the 2016 election with a comfortable margin if he decides to run. The same poll showed Fernandez would win in a second round.
