Ten deaths from cholera so far this year

The Ministry of Health has announced that 147 suspected cholera cases have been registered so far this year, including 10 deaths, representing a slight increase over 2014.

According to Epidemiological Bulletin No. 7, in the last few weeks there has been an outbreak of diarrhea with 114 cases in Santiago, 40 in Santo Domingo province, 19 in the National District and 15 in San Pedro de Macoris, for a total of 188 cases. The Ministry will now focus actions on improving hygiene via education to try and reduce the number of cases.

The bulletin also says that dengue fever and chikungunya are down on last year with 81 cases of dengue and 35 of chikungunya so far but there has been a small increase in the numbers of people with malaria, with 10 suspected cases.

Finally the bulletin says that there has been a significant decline in maternal and infant deaths over the same period last year with two maternal deaths at Jose Maria Cabral and Baez Hospital in Santiago and Marcelino Velez Santana hospital in Santo Domingo West in the last few weeks bringing the total for the year so far to 16.

So far there have been 40 infant deaths, 11% below the same period last year. The hospitals with the highest infant death rates were Robert Reid Cabral, 32%, Arturo Grullon 20%, Our Lady of Altagracia Maternity Hospital 22% and San Lorenzo de Los Mina Maternity Hospital (10%).
