Fernandez calls IACHR sentence “ridiculous”

Former President Leonel Fernandez has reiterated his opinion that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) exceeded its attributions by trying to impose obligations on the Dominican state that are not covered by International Law, as reported in El Nuevo Diario. Fernandez added that the Dominican Republic was not obliged to obey this sentence, as by doing so it would be renouncing its status as a sovereign nation. Fernandez said that the Dominican Republic had signed the Human Rights Convention in good faith and never thought that the Court was going to try to force it to modify its Constitution and its laws in order to adapt to one of their decisions. “The court has acted disrespectfully towards the Dominican state,” declared the former President, who described the sentence as “a ridiculous” judicial decision. Fernandez made his comments yesterday, Wednesday 25 March 2015, during a seminar organized by his Funglode foundation on the topic of “Human Rights, Nationality and Sovereignty,” held at the Pedro Henriquez Urena National Library in Santo Domingo.
