Priests pray for better Dominican justice

In their Good Friday Seven Last Words sermons on 3 April 2015, Roman Catholic priests focused on corruption and the Dominican judiciary.

In the first sermon, Father Domingo of the Cristo Salvador de Honduras preached: “Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing,” and added that Dominican justice was a source of shame for all Dominicans. He said that Dominicans are dreaming of the day when justice is transparent, true and fair.

“What can be said about Justice, now the shame of all Dominicans? The day will come when we have a justice system that does not convict a man who robs a salami to eat, but instead imposes harsh penalties on those who abuse their positions to steal for personal gain, that will not be tricked by the ruling political party, that will be apolitical, fair and objective, a justice that will be the pride of the Dominican people,” he said. He added that the people were dreaming of senators, deputies and members of the Executive Branch who instead of receiving the highest wages will receive minimum wages, to prove that working for the common good is the best way to live.

The message was shared following the pre-Easter Supreme Court of Justice judge decision that prevented a trial from being opened in the cases of PLD senator Felix Bautista and the city mayor of San Francisco de Macoris, Felix Rodriguez, both accused of large-scale corruption.
