President Danilo Medina will be in Panama this week for the Seventh Summit of the Americas. The event is expected to attract world headlines with the presence of Presidents Barack Obama of the United States and Raul Castro of Cuba. This will be the first meeting between Obama and Castro since their countries started the process of normalizing relations.
The Dominican presidential agenda for the event includes meetings with President Barack Obama on Friday, 10 April as part of the Central American Integration System (SICA). On Saturday 11 April, Medina is scheduled to meet with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The focus is expected to be the implementation of the National Foreigner Legalization Plan that expires on 15 June 2015. The plan has given foreigners, especially Haitians, a low cost and fast-tracked path to residency and citizenship, but has been affected by lack of cooperation from the Haitian government.
During his visit, Medina will inaugurate the new Dominican Embassy facilities in Panama City on Thursday, 9 April 2015.
Medina will be in Panama through Sunday, 12 April 2015. He will be traveling with Minister of Foreign Relations Andres Navarro. Navarro is scheduled to meet with his Haitian counterpart, Pierre Duly Brutus, amidst reports that Brutus plans to leave the post in order to run for President of Haiti in October 2015 election.
