Former President Leonel Fernandez and president of the ruling PLD party will be holding a meeting with his supporters this Sunday, 12 April 2015 at the Virgilio Travieso Soto Sports Palace starting at 10am.
Fernandez, a PLD pre-candidate, will meet with senators, deputies, mayors, the party’s Central Committee members and provincial and municipal party presidents.
At a press conference, Senator Francis Vargas said that those responsible for the electorate at different levels would also be attending as well as the intermediaries who will be coordinating the former President’s campaign teams.
Vargas confirmed that Fernandez had the support of 18 senators and 58 deputies and that at the meeting he would be told of the levels of support he had throughout the electorate and how they would be organized in order to achieve success.
The meeting will be held just a week before the PLD political committee meets on Sunday 19 April 2015 to decide whether the Constitution will be changed to allow President Danilo Medina to run for President again. The current 2010 Constitution bans consecutive re-election, but the ruling PLD has a large enough majority in Congress to reform the Constitution to allow re-election.
