Doctors at the three public hospitals in the province of Valverde (Mao) in the north west of the country went on strike yesterday, Monday 13 April 2013 with a long list of demands from surgeons, anesthetists, orthopedic doctors and interns.
The Dominican Medical Association (CMD) is organizing the strike. According to provincial president Pedro Nicasio, the list of demands was issued two months ago and the health authorities have not even responded to the basic ones.
Nicasio stated that the strike would affect consultations and selective and elective procedures in public hospitals in Mao, Esperanza and Laguna Salada.
However, he said that they would consider calling off the strike if a Ministry of Public Health commission were to meet with the doctors to explore solutions to their problems.
Their demands include the completion of remodeling work at the Luis L. Bogaert hospital in Mao, a blood bank, intensive care ward, 24 hour X-ray service, mental health ward and equipment for CAT scans.
Last week the same doctors went on strike for two days and on Friday, 10 April, they decided to strike again starting yesterday, Monday 13 April, this time indefinitely.
Dozens of patients have been sent to other public hospitals in neighboring Santiago.
