Banreservas to help with loan payments

According to the Banco de Reservas general administrator, Enrique Ramirez Paniagua, the bank will reschedule payment on loans to producers of fruit and vegetables whose exports have been affected by the ban imposed by the United States due to the Medfly outbreak in the east of the country.

Ramirez said that they would assess each affected producer and adjust the payment schedule of any outstanding loans as required.

The BanReservas executive added that the bank’s account managers would hold meetings with farmers of peppers, avocados, tomatoes, oranges and lemons as well as other products, in order to reschedule their credit as required.

He said that this aid program would remain in place until the United States lifts the ban.

In mid-March 2015, the United States Department of Agriculture imposed a ban on 18 varieties of fruits and vegetables coming from the Dominican Republic due to the presence of Medfly within a 22km radius of Punta Cana airport.

Producers have accused the Ministry of Agriculture for lax application of regulations that led to the entry of Medfly in a transshipment from Peru at the Punta Cana International Airport.
