Ivan Garcia wins El Gran Soberano

The annual show business extravaganza, the El Soberano Awards, organized by the Association of Arts Writers (Acroarte) and sponsored by Cerveceria Nacional Dominicana, honored the arts writers’ top picks for 2014. The main award, El Gran Soberano, went to playwright and actor Ivan Garcia.

The Oscars-style televised show began yesterday evening, Tuesday 14 April 2015 with the red carpet interviews at 7pm. It continued inside the National Theater from 9pm lasting until around midnight. It was an evening that celebrated merengue (Fernando Villalona), bachata (Frank Reyes) and salsa, but there was also space for new beats like dembow (Mozart La Para). There was time for nostalgia, with tributes to fashion designer Oscar de la Renta and singer Sonia Silvestre, who both passed away in 2014. Homage was also paid to ballad singers Olga Lara and Vickiana.

Former Miss World Mariasela Alvarez and comedian Cuquin Victoria were the hosts.
