Attorney General Office children’s coordinator Marisol Tobal says that 40 children were rescued from begging on the city streets in Santo Domingo yesterday, Thursday 16 April 2015. Children were picked up from several avenues, including Maximo Gomez, Nunez de Caceres with 27 de Febrero, Romulo Betancourt, Winston Churchill and Independencia.
A total of 40 boys aged 9 to 16, including 13 Haitians and one Haitian girl were found begging on the streets and engaging in work such as washing windows and selling merchandise. The Attorney General Office is implementing the measures together with the Judicial Police Specialized in Children and Adolescents (NNA), the Metropolitan Transport Authority (Amet) and the National Council for Children and Adolescents (Conani). The children will be returned to their homes and their parents will be sent to court for violating the Children’s Code.
