Residents of the southwestern city of Bani took to the streets yesterday, Sunday 19 April 2015, in protest against the construction of two coal-fired power generation plants by the government in the province. The demonstrators marched through the city and Diario Libre reported that original protestors received the support of many others as the march progressed.
The protest was organized by the Coordinadora de Lucha Popular de la Provincia Peravia.
Protestors also called for the completion of an aqueduct to serve the province, fair distribution of water from the Valdesia Dam, the construction of the bypass on the northern part of the city of Bani, and the completion of the Peravia-Valdesia highway and of a university.
The coal-fired generation project is expected to cost over US$1.9 billion, of which the government says US$600 million has reportedly already been invested. The government has negotiated US$1.2 billion in financing from Brazil’s BNDES bank.
