Truckers return to Haiti

Cargo trucks from the Dominican Republic have returned to Haiti, this time with the protection of United Nations Minustah peacekeeping forces. The Fenatrado-affiliated truckers had stopped crossing the border due to fears that their safety was not guaranteed given the instability in Haiti. The truckers said they did not trust the Haitian Police and demanded Minustah protection. Blas Peralta of Fenatrado said that the problems were not caused by competition from Haitian truckers, but by political protestors who were venting their rage against the government on the Dominican truckers.

Peralta said that the best solution would be for the international community to build a goods distribution center at the border, so that Dominican trucks could leave the cargo there for collection by Haitian transporters.
