National Education Day will now be commemorated on 11 January, the Presidency announced yesterday, Wednesday 22 April 2015. Law is 541-14 was signed on 25 November 2014. The date honors the birthday of Puerto Rican educator Eugenio Maria de Hostos who is recognized for making innovative contributions to education in the country. This included founding the Escuela Normal de Santo Domingo in 1880, and the Instituto de Senoritas school for girls.
The Ministry of Education will be in charge of planning a full program of events for the occasion.
