At a press conference yesterday, Tuesday 12 May 2015, the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM), which is holding its 35th Annual General Assembly in Santo Domingo through Thursday 15 May 2015, called for the Catholic Church to open to modern social media to reach young people and keep them away from vices.
The bishops attending the working sessions of the bishops of Latin America held at the Casa De Convivencia Maria de la Altagracia on the Las Americas Highway expressed their concern for drug use among their followers.
The 35th Episcopal Conference of Latin America and the Caribbean is reviewing the last four years and outline the pastoral priorities for the region from 2015 to 2019. Eighty bishops are taking part.
“Drug addiction speaks to the abuse of substances that touches on aspects of human freedom and responsibility. I think there are degrees of drug use and reasons that there are so many young people and adults involved in something that is affecting human dignity that for us is sacred. “We do not want anyone to lose their freedom to something that is not what gives life,” said the Celam Economic Committee chairman, Monsignor Carlos Collazi.
