New extradition treaty with Mexico

Yesterday, Tuesday, 26 May 2015, the Chamber of Deputies made progress towards the approval of a resolution for an extradition treaty with Mexico. The initial agreement was signed on 23 July 2013.

The treaty aims to improve cooperation between both countries in the fight against crime and will help extradite criminals based on the principles of respect for sovereignty and equality.

The deputies also approved the opening of a conciliation court in the tourist area of Veron-Punta Cana, in the eastern province of La Altagracia (Higuey). Deputy Juan Julio Campos, who proposed the motion, said it was very important, as there were around 40,000 hotel rooms in the area, as well as one of the country’s main airports. There were also many real estate companies and therefore, a conciliation court was vital.
