Thousands of followers of Luis Abinader, the presidential candidate for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) assembled for a march in Santo Domingo on Saturday, 6 June 2015. The march through several city neighborhoods ended at the Parque Independencia at around 7pm. The marchers were protesting at the alliance between the ruling PLD and the PRD. The PRM is a dissident group that broke away from the PRD. Abinader will be officially proclaimed as the party’s candidate at the Palacio de los Deportes on Sunday, 14 June 2015. Speaking to the crowds at the march, Abinader criticized President Danilo Medina for trying to stay in power by using methods that he himself had denounced in the past. Abinader said that Medina had described presidential re-election as damaging to Dominican institutions and the national budget. He said that through this pact with the PRD to pass re-election, Medina has defrauded a large segment of society that believed in his commitment to act in the nation’s best interests.
