Tear gas fired on Haitians

Hundreds of Haitian workers were dispersed when police agents fired tear gas as they protested on Av. Leopoldo Navarro, next to the Ministry of Interior and Police, the main center for the National Foreigner Legalization Plan.

The Haitians want the Dominican government to extend the plan and complained that they have not been able to regularize their status because the Haitian authorities have not given them the documentation to register.

In addition, Jesus Nunez, spokesman for a group of sugarcane workers who were protesting outside the Ministry building, said that the director had not complied with an agreement to register them separately.

Several other confrontations erupted between police and Haitians in the Regularization Center in Los Angeles, Santo Domingo East where the police accused the Haitians of disrupting the lines and the Haitians said the police were putting people ahead of them in the lines. Several said they had been trying to register for four or five days.

Undocumented foreigners had a year to regularize their status.
